Chris Rock joked about Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett-Smith’s shaved head, and compared her to ‘G.I. Jane’.
Jada has hair loss condition alopecia and Will reacted to the comment by going on stage and striking Rock across the face.
“My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally,” stated Will.
The actor also added, “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.”
"The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night's show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law."
Soon after the incident, Jaden tweeted, “And that's how we do it" without referring to the slap.
The LAPD had later confirmed that Chris Rock had ‘declined to file a police report’ against Will Smith.
